Fedena ID Cards

Fedena is a student information system used by over 40,000 schools and colleges world wide. The desktop version was launched in 2009 with subsquent revisions and features. A mobile browser version was launched in a couple of years. Ever since there was a growing need from its customers for a dedicated mobile app which would meet the need of different users.

Detailed Case Study

Type: Web App with portable ID Card Printers

My Role: Product Manager

Problems:

  1. Institutions depend on third party vendors for printing student and employee ID cards who are not very reliable at times.

  2. User data is easily lost and/or error prone during transfer or entry often using Excel Sheets.

  3. ID cards are lost and need to be replaced often therefore require frequent printing in small quantities.

  4. Certificates issued by the institution have to be also published following different designs.

  5. Certificates in small batches need to be printed and made available digitally as well as physically

Approach

Realizing the need for multiple ID Cards printed each year in most of Fedena’s primary customer markets in India, the Middle East and South Asian countries, we took up the idea of a template based ID Card Generator module within Fedena itself. Each ID card design could be created by customizing the logos, watermarked backgrounds, dynamic and fixed texts. Designs are saved by Academic Year for easy access. ID card designs could also be imported from the system and dynamic text replacement could be done. By introducing a physical component of Portable ID Card printers, our schools could start printing ID Cards any time. Portable ID Card Printers were made available as part of the package for customers and resellers.

Outcome

  1. Schools and resellers widely adopted the feature. Being directly linked to the student and employee information database, error rates during to data entry and data transfer were greatly reduced.

  2. Two sizes of prints - ID Card Size and A4 size multiple print allowed institutions to print inhouse using portable printers or print in bulk through outside printing vendors.

  3. Resellers starting owning the end to end designing and printing service thus leading to increased revenues for themselves and reduced friction for their end users.
