Fedena Connect Mobile App

Fedena is a student information system used by over 40,000 schools and colleges world wide. The desktop version was launched in 2009 with subsquent revisions and features. A mobile browser version was launched in a couple of years. Ever since there was a growing need from its customers for a dedicated mobile app which would meet the need of different users.

Type: Mobile App - iOS and Android

My Role: Product Manager and User Researcher

Problems:

  1. Instructors do not have access to a computer to use Fedena to record attendance.

  2. Parents are not able to access their students’ academic performance easily.

  3. School administrators want a mobile app to keep parents updated with latest events in the school.

  4. School managers wanted to get an overview of all activities of the school (v2).

  5. Academic admins wanted the mobile app to be the hub during and after Covid-19 (v2).

Approach and Outcome:

Version 1

Directed the strategy, planning & successful launch of version 1 of the Fedena Connect Mobile app on Android and iOS, achieving a 30% increase in product adoption as well as expanding the user base to new customers. Attendance entry by instructors increased by 70%. Features launched include:

  • Attendance Entry for teachers to quickly mark attendance from their phones

  • Online Fee Payment for parents to quickly pay fees using popular payment gateways

  • News and Events for the school administrator to quickly send important notices to parents and students

Version 2

Later before and during Covid-19, version 2 releases of the app became a hub when social distancing and remote learning became the norm. Features launched include:

  • New delivery model: A new single mobile app for SaaS customers and a new faster configurable indivudal app model for institutions who wanted to have their own branded apps.

  • Reports dashboard for school managers to access all information about the school including attendance

  • Gradebook mark entry allowed teachers to enter grades without depending on shared systems, which increased usage by over 60%.

  • Learn module allowed students watch videos and attend quizzes from the comfort of their homes during remote learning days.

  • Gate management with Barcode/QR Code scanning allowed a safe contactless system for parents and visitors to enter and leave.

Overall the mobile apps have been widely adopted by the different institutions. The new single app model was widely adopted by customers due to the very little additional premium involved. Institutions who wanted a premium mobile app in their name were able to use the new white-labled version in their own color scheme and branding, leading to a dedicated services revenue stream from the mobile app itself for the company. Most of the users of the app have been widely appreciative of the features as evident by the many 4+ star rating in the App Store and Play Store.
